British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
