Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
